"Stand fast, Craigellachie!"

This week, on the occasion of my 35th birthday (old I am, huh?), I've got the nicest Single Malt in my life so far: Murray McDavid Mission III Craigellachie 1970. Distilled in the year I was born, aged in oak casks for 33 years, then bottled only 498 limited edition bottles - out of which one has landed last week in my collection. I'm still hesitating to open it, but already dug up the internet for information or tasting notes. In Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2005 it was rated for 93 points, which fact suggest to taste it ... but it is so rare and valuable for me, that I'll rather keep it unopened. Craigellachie distillery was established in 1888, made prospering by "Restless" Peter J. Mackie who created the famous White Horse Blend and who was also the owner of Lagavulin on Islay. The distillery is now owned by Bacardi. Only 2% is marketed as Single Malt, the remaining part is used in blends, mainly in Dewar's White Label. Since UDV had to sell the distillery and Bacardi took over, the only bottlings on the market are those of some independent bottlers. Like my precious one. The only question still remains: taste it or not. Maybe I'll wait until I'm 40 (or more).

Ezen a héten, 35. születésnapomra (öregszem) kaptam életem eddigi legszebb, legjobb single malt whiskyjét: Murray McDavid Mission III Craigellachie 1970. Születésem évében párolták, 33 évig érlelődött tölgyfahordóban, majd egy Limited Edition sorozat keretében mindössze 498 palackot hoztak forgalomba - amiből egy az én gyűjteményemben landolt. Még hezitálok, hogy egyáltalán kinyissam-e, de az internetet már felkutattam infóért vagy tasting notes-ért. Jim Murray 2005-ös Whisky Bibliájában 93 pontra értékelte, ami azt mondja nyissam ki ... de ez a whisky annyira ritka és számomra annyira értékes, hogy talán mégis inkább megőrzöm bontatlanul. A Craigellachie lepárlót 1888-ban alapították, majd az a "Fáradhatatlan" Peter J. Mackie virágoztatta fel, aki megalkotta a híres White Horse blended whiskyt, illetve akinek az Islay szigeti Lagavulin is a tulajdonában volt. Ma az üzem a Bacardi tulajdona. A gyártott whiskynek csak 2%-a kerül single malt whiskyként forgalomba, a többi mind blended whiskykbe kerül, nagyobbrészt a Dewar's White Lable whiskybe. Mióta a UDV-t kötelezték az üzem eladására és a Bacardi megvette, azóta csak független palackozók által készített különlegességként vásárolható meg. Mint az enyém. Most már csak egyetlen kérdés maradt: megkóstoljam avagy sem. Talán inkább megvárom amíg 40 (vagy még idősebb)leszek.
