World Whisky Conference

World WHisky Conference took place at the end of April in order to discuss the issues and challenges the whisky industry is about to face in the near future. I have just recently read some of the strangest statements which were agreed on the conference:
- Get rid of regionality! Make it possible to produce whisky anywhere around the world without any restrictions on where it can officially be produced. ... So no more privileges for Scotch, Irish, American whisk(e)ys? Let's get used to Scotch made in Namibia or what???
- Do not stick to the traditional ingredients only! It is time to think beyond barley and grain! Let's try new tastes, widen the range, etc, etc! ... So be prepared for flavoured whiskies??? ... actually, Ballantine's was trying to launch a wildberry flavoured version in France couple of years ago, but it has failed ... maybe not without a reason???
- The balance of power moved toward the big multinationals within the industry, so it might be the time for small and family-owned companies to re-consider there future and plans. ... Bloody hell ... the big ones really think that the small firms shall voluntarily melt in or what???
- Advertising do not has an effect on the frequency and quantity of consumption, but rather impacts the decision on the brands. ... Bullshit ... Advertisement is about to convince potential consumers not only to choose a specific brand but also to choose it more frequently and maybe even instead of beer, wine or RTD.

If those multinationals really believes that this is the way ahead, then I count myself to the conservatives and will fight for keeping the whisky-heritage and traditions.

Április végén zajlott a World Whisky Conference, ahol a nagyvállalatok vezetői megtanácskozták az iparág előtt álló problémákat és kihívásokat. Nemrégiben került a kezembe néhány rendkívül furcsa megállapítás, amiben egyetértettek ezen a bizonyos konferencián:
Namíbiában is???
... A fenébe ... a nagyok tényleg komolyan gondolják, hogy a kicsiknek önként be kellene olvadniuk???
- A reklámozás nem a fogyasztás mennyiségét és gyakoriságát befolyásolja, hanem a fogyasztók márkaválasztását segíti. ... Baromság ... A reklámok éppen annyira befolyásolják a márkaválasztást, amennyire ösztönöznek gyakoribb fogyasztásra vagy éppen whiskyk fogyasztására sör, bor, stb helyett.

Ha a multinacionális szeszipari vállalatok komolyan gondolják, hogy ez a jövő, akkor én ezennel azon konzervatívok közé számolom magam, akik lelkesen fognak harcolni a whisky hagyományokért és tradíciókért.

Whisky Tests in Decanter

This is the 100th post on this blog. It would be great to write about something important or exciting. But the only thing happened in my "whisky-world" is that I am very much disappointed about the results of the two whisky tests I attended recently. First there was this Scotch test held by Decanter. Then a month later came the second round with Bourbons, Irish and Canadian whiskies. Although both were blind tests, I am really down because of the results. Amongst Scotch whiskies some Label5 blended Scotch has beaten Johnnie, Ballantine's, Grant's. If there would be a Label5 12 years old then it would have probably achieved better score than Chivas. I still can't believe that we gave so much higher scores to no-name or copycat whiskies. Sad. The Bourbon round showed a wee bit better picture. Rebel Yell became the overall winner ahead of Jim Beam Black and Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack. Strange, but this I can accept. But the Scotch ... oh ... it's really a shame. Anyway, I took some Cooley Irish single malt with me, just to show the other participants something unique ... guess what? They have never heard of it.

A bourbon forduló eredménye ennél parányival jobb képet mutat.

Cooley

I have found a small franchise store in Budapest, where any sort of liqueurs but even some Scotch and Irish whisk(e)ys are on sale directly from barrels. Strange, huh? At least unusual to buy whisky from barrels outside of Scotland. But it's possible. The store belongs to some sort of Swiss franchise. Anyway, I bought a pint of Cooley as it is not available in any format in Hungary. For decades, the only Irish that could be found around the world was Jameson and Bushmills. Since the begining of the 90ies, Tullamore Dew is back. But in the meantime, Cooley was re-established without any noise in 1989. The only Irish distillery which uses double distillation. It was surprising for me that any whiskey under the name Cooley is sold as in the past there was no whiskey called Cooley on the market. The Cooley distillery produced however such famous old brands like The Tyrconnel Irish single malt, or Connemara, or the two grain whiskeys, Locke's and Kilbeggan, or the slightly peated Inishowen, and finally the unique Miller's Special Reserve. But no whiskey called Cooley so far. It should be a mistake from the franchise to sell Cooley without mentioning the brand name. Or I have just missed the official release of Cooley from the Cooley distillery? The whiskey was however bright pale golden in colour, light parfumy fragranced, not oily at all, but easy to swallow without any harsh feeling left behind. Good for beginners or ladies.

Aztán a 90-es évek elején először visszatért a Tullamore Dew, miközben szép csendben a Cooley lepárlót is helyreállították 1989-ben.
