Írtam már néhány cikket a whisk[e]ykről a YachtLife című negyedévente megjelenő magyar-angol nyelvű magazinba. A cikkeket is felteszem majd ide a blogra, de előbb egy kis kedvcsináló a whisk[e]y-ajánló részből.

The Arran Malt Tokaji Finish 10 éves maláta whisky
Egy kis sziget Skócia dél-nyugati részén, amelyen egyetlen lepárló üzem működik. Az üzem bátor kezdeményezése, hogy tokaji boros hordókban való érleléssel kísérletezik. A tokaji hordónak köszönhetően ez a whisky édes, gyümölcs illatú, gazdag ízű, amelyben enyhe citrusosság enyhíti a sziruposan édes desszertbor karaktert.

Laphroaig 10 éves maláta whisky
A híres Islay szigetének egy legkedveltebb lepárló üzeme a Laphroaig. Whiskyje igen tőzeges, karakterében füstös, jódos, száraz. Csak rutinos whiskykedvelőknek ajánlott, mert aki először kóstol whiskyt életében, annak könnyen elveheti a kedvét minden további próbálkozástól.

Elijah Craig 12 éves bourbon whiskey
Az egyik legelső név a bourbon whiskeyk között. Ritkaság számba megy, hogy egy alapvetően kukoricából készített és frissen kiégetett új tölgyfahordóba töltött whiskey-t 12 évig érleljenek. A kukorica édessége és lágysága könnyen tönkretehető az új hordó csersavas, túlzottan vaníliás hatásával. Az Elijah Craig viszont éppen a határig érlelt.

The Arran Malt Tokaji Finish 10-year-old malt whisky
There is a little island at the southwestern part of Scotland with a single distillery. The innovation of the place are the experiments of maturing the whisky in casks of Tokaji wine. Due to the Tokaji cask the whisky gets fruity smell and rich flavour with a tiny citrus easing the syrupy sweet dessert wine character.

Laphroaig 10-year-old malt whisky
The most famous distillery of Islay Island is Laphroaig. Its whisky has an intensive dry character of peat, smoke and iodine. It’s advised only for real whisky drinkers, because those who taste the whisky for the first time, this type can cut the adventurous mood easily.

Elijah Craig 12-year-old bourbon whiskey
This is one of the best bourbon whiskeys. It isn’t common at all to maturate for 12 years a corn-based whiskey in freshly burned new casks. The sweet and smooth taste of corn can be easily destroyed by the tannin and vanilla character of the new cask. Elijah Craig is however matured just until the limit.

Ever heard of a Tokaji Cask Finish?

Have you ever tasted a Tokaji Cask Finish whisky? No? And have you ever tasted Tokaji wine? This is a special late harvest wine from the North-Eastern region of Hungary, called Tokaj. „Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum” as we say it in Hungary, which means: The wine of Kings, the King of the wines. And it really is! There are even 3 distilleries which found it a good idea to put there Single Malt Scotch whiskies into ex-Tokaji wine casks for a couple of years: Isle of Arran, Benromach, Edradour. I heard once from Edradour that after one and a half year they had to take the whisky out of the Tokaji barrels as the wine itself is so characteristic and had so much influence in such a short time, that ageing longer in Tokaji wine casks might have ruined the whisky. As the Tokaji wine itself is very sweet, a wee bit spicy, but full of aromas of sundried fruits, the casks transfers these aromas into the whisky, too. So grab a bottle of a Tokaji Cask Finish next time you are in a whisky store, and taste it! (The very same post you can find on forscotchlovers.com, too.)

Próbálta már a Tokaji Cask Finish whiskyt? Nem? De tokaji aszút ivott már, ugye? „Vinum Regnum, Rex Vinorum” vagyis a „Királyok bora, a borok királya”. De ezt mindenki tudja. Három maláta whisky lepárló van Skóciában, akik fantáziát láttak whiskyjük tokaji boros hordóban történő utóérlelésére: az Arran, a Benromach és az Edradour. Az Edradour embereitől hallottam egyszer, hogy másfél év után ki kellett venni a whiskyt a tokajis hordókból, mert az aszú olyan karakteres és olyan hatással volt a whiskyre, hogy minden további nap csak rontott volna a whisky aromáján. Mivel a tokaji aszú igen édes, kissé fűszeres, aszalt gyümölcsös aromákkal, ezek a jellemzők a hordón keresztül átkerülnek a whiskybe is. Szóval csak jóra számítsunk. Egy próbát megér. Ever heard of a Cognac Cask Finish?

Traditionally, Scotch whisky was matured either in Bourbon casks or Sherry casks. Couple of decades ago, some marketing guru might have advised to leading Single Malt distilleries to use Bourbon casks for the first period of the maturation, then Sherry casks for the last couple of years … then label the whisky as Sherry Cask Finish. To be honest, I don’t know who was the very first to play this card, but did it right. Since then distilleries marketed several variations of cask finish whiskies: Port wood finish, Madeira wood finish, Burgundy wood finish.

Have you ever tasted a Cognac Cask Finish whisky? No? No wonder, because Cognac is hardly available for cask finishes. The reason is simple. Cognac itself is a trademark. Therefore Cognac producers do not intend to let anyone else to use and place the word ’Cognac’ on any bottle of spirits, except real Cognac from the French region of Cognac. So, even if any of the Scottish distilleries tried to finish its Scotch Malt whisky in ex-Cognac casks, they need to be tricky to be allowed to place the word "Cognac" onto their whisky label. Isle of Arran does many variations of cask finish whiskies. The way they do it is that they set a deal with Hardy Cognac, USA.

A skót whiskyt hagyományosan bourbon whiskys vagy sherrys hordókban érlelték. Jó pár évtizeddel ezelőtt valami okos marketinges tanácsolhatta valamelyik vezető maláta whisky lepárlónak, hogy használja az érlelés első periódusában csak a bourbon hordókat, majd tegye át pár évre whiskyjét a sherrys hordókba, ezek után jelölje meg a whisky címkéjén, hogy „Sherry Cask Finish”. Őszintén szólva fogalmam sincs melyik lepárló volt a legelső, de jól tette, amit tett. Azóta számtalan cask finish whisky variációval találkozhattunk: portói bor, madeira bor, burgundy bor finish.
De hallott már valaki Cognac Cask Finish whiskyről? Nem? Nem csoda, hiszen a cognac-os hordók nehezen megszerezhetők utóérlelésre. Az ok egyszerű. A Cognac egy védjegy, amit a franciák nagyon óvnak. Nem hagyják bárkinek (és főleg nem a konkurenciának), hogy akármikor ellenőrizetlenül használja. Csak a francia cognac régióból származó valódi cognac címkéin tűntethető fel. Elméletileg. Szóval, ha egy whisky lepárló kis is próbálja milyen lehet whiskyje Cognac hordókban történő utóérlelés után, nem feltétlenül írhatja a címkére, hogy „Cognac Cask Finish”. Persze van erre is megoldás. Az Isle of Arran sok finisht kipróbált már, miért pont ezt hagyná ki. Az ő trükkje, hogy megállapodást kötött az amerikai Hardy Cognac nevű céggel, így használhatja a Napoleon Cognac Cask Finish elnevezést.

Oceans of whiskies

Along the Orinoco river that borders Brazil and Venezuela, the Yanomamö people are living (hunter-gatherers) whose average annual income is estimated at the equivalent of $90 per person. Living along the Hudson river that borders New York City and New Jersey are the Manhattan people (consumer-traders) whose average annual income is around $36,000 per person. That dramatic difference of 400 times pales in comparison to the differences in the number of types of retail products available, which has been estimated at 300 for the Yanomamö people and 10 billions for the Manhattans, a difference of 33 million times! Why am I telling this? Because, according to Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, there are around 3,000 whiskies produced by around 150 distilleries in the world. None of them for Yanomamö, of course. But all of them are for us. Sometimes I simply have the feeling that it is impossible to taste each and everyone. It is even harder to pick one as a favourite. Not to mention all the old curiosities and collectors' items, which I have only a very limited knowledge. Anyway, the 2008 Whisky Bible is published long ago: available here and here. Buy it and try to pick your favourite whisky from the crowd! And think for a moment of the Yanomamö people!

A Brazília és Venezuela határán folydogáló Orinoco folyó mentén él a Yanomamö törzs (gyűjtögető-vadászó emberek), akiknek éves keresetét úgy fejenként 90 dollárra saccolják. A New York-ot és New Jersey-t elválasztó Hudson folyó mentén élnek a manhattaniek, akiknek éves jövedelme a statisztikák szerint 36.000 dollár fejenként. Ennél a 400-szoros különbségnél még nagyobb a differencia az "élőhelyükön" megvásárolható termékek számát tekintve. Becslések szerint kb. 300-féle termék érhető el a Yanomamö-k számára, míg 33 milliószor több vagyis mintegy 10 milliárd a manhattani üzletekben. És hogy miért mondom el mindezt? Jim Murray Whisky Bibliája szerint 150 lepárló üzem csaknem 3.000 különböző whisk(e)y-je kapható szerte a világon. Valószínűleg egyik sem a Yanomamöknek, de mind nekünk fogyasztói társadalmaknak készül. Néha az az érzésem, hogy képtelenség ennyi whisk(e)y-t végigkóstolni. Még nehezebb ezek közül egyetlen kedvencet kiválasztani. Nem is említve most a régről ránk maradt különlegességeket és gyűjtök kedvenceit, amelyekről ráadásul még elég kevés fogalmam van. No de mindegy, a 2008-as Whisky Biblia már tavaly évvégén megjelent: elérhető itt és itt. Vegyétek meg és próbáljátok kiválasztani kedvenc whisk(e)y-teket abból a sok ezerből! És gondoljatok egy picit a Yanomamö indiánokra!

Whisky Tests in Decanter

This is the 100th post on this blog. It would be great to write about something important or exciting. But the only thing happened in my "whisky-world" is that I am very much disappointed about the results of the two whisky tests I attended recently. First there was this Scotch test held by Decanter. Then a month later came the second round with Bourbons, Irish and Canadian whiskies. Although both were blind tests, I am really down because of the results. Amongst Scotch whiskies some Label5 blended Scotch has beaten Johnnie, Ballantine's, Grant's. If there would be a Label5 12 years old then it would have probably achieved better score than Chivas. I still can't believe that we gave so much higher scores to no-name or copycat whiskies. Sad. The Bourbon round showed a wee bit better picture. Rebel Yell became the overall winner ahead of Jim Beam Black and Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack. Strange, but this I can accept. But the Scotch ... oh ... it's really a shame. Anyway, I took some Cooley Irish single malt with me, just to show the other participants something unique ... guess what? They have never heard of it.

Ez éppen a századik bejegyzés ezen a blogon. Ilyenkor jó lenne persze valami fontosról, izgalmasról írni, de sajnos az én "whisky-világomban" csak egyetlen, éppenséggel lehangoló esemény történt. Az elmúlt két hónapban két whisky teszten is résztvettem. Az első a Decanter magazin által szervezett skót whisky teszt volt, amit egy hónappal követett a bourbon-ír-kanadai whisyk tesztje. Jóllehet mindkettő vakteszt volt, én mégis le vagyok sújtva, hogy milyen eredmények születtek. A skót whiskyk között a tökéletesen ismeretlen Label5 nevű valami kapta a legtöbb pontot, megelőzve a Johnnie-t, Ballantine's-t, Grant's-et. Ha létezne 12 éves Label5, képes lett volna lenyomni a Chivast is. Nem tudom elhinni, hogy nevesincs whiskyk és másolatok ilyen sok pontot tudtak szerezni. Ez elég szomorú. A bourbon forduló eredménye ennél parányival jobb képet mutat. A Rebel Yell lett a győztes, maga mögé utasítva a Jim Beam Blacket és a Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jacket. Kissé fura, de ezt még vhogy el tudom fogadni. De a skót eredmény ... jaj ... hát az nagyon ciki. Na mindegy, azért vittem egy kis Cooley ir single malt whiskyt a többi résztvevőnek. És mit mondtak? Sose hallottak róla.
