Blended Quest #2 William Lawson

The company was first established by William Lawson in Dundee in 1849, but it became bankrupt in a very short time. It took almost hundred years to re-start the company and produce blended whisky again. And what a surprise, the new William Lawson established its business not in Scotland, but near Liverpool right after the Second World War, when the ban on using grain for producing whisky was lifted. It was in 1967, when the company moved back to Scotland (in the city of Coatbridge) with its distillery equipments, devices, employees, barrel, warehouses and ageing stocks of whisky. The brand achieved most of its successes in export markets rather than in Scotland. Recently, it became famous of its advertisements, like the one starring Sharon Stone. In terms of the character of the whisky, Speyside is the leader in nose and taste, thanks to its fingerprint Scotch Malt whiskies, MacDuff or Glen Deveron. There is not even a single drop of peaty Islay Malt whisky, although its Single Malt whisky content exceeds 45%. Another characteristic ingredient is the usage of corn-based grain whisky in the blend, but no wheat-based grain spirit. The William Lawson Finest I tasted might contain some non-peated Islay Malt, hence the wee bit smoky touch in its aroma. A great whisky indeed. Some experts even recognizes aromas which were so much characteristic in the whiskies in the 1840s. Slightly distant, cold, copper and green malty in its scent. Full-bodied, oily, malted-smokiness in its aroma, ending a long, grainy, spicy finish. Unfortunately, it is rarely available in Hungary. So grab it, if you find it in any whisky stores. It is really a fine and characteristic Blended Scotch and a good choice. It is worth the money even without Sharon Stone.

A céget William Lawson alapította Dundee-ban 1849-ben, ám az sajnos hamar tönkre ment. Majdnem száz év kellett, hogy újra megalakuljon és termelni kezdjen. Furcsa módon nem is Skóciában, hanem Angliában (Liverpool mellett) indult újra a vállalkozás közvetlenül a II. világháborút követően, amint a whisky-célú gabonafelhasználást ismét lehetővé tették. 1967-ben azután az egész cég munkásokkal, eszközökkel, lepárlókkal, hordókkal és árukészlettel együtt "visszaköltözött" Skóciába, Coatbridge városkába. A skótok bizalmát nem sikerült megnyernie, így azóta is minden energiáját az export piacokra összpontosítja. Az utóbbi évben figyelemfelkeltő reklámjairól vált híressé, melyek közül egyikben éppen Sharon Stone játsza a főszerepet. A William Lawson whiskykben főleg a speyside whiskyk tündökölnek. Fingerprint malátája a MacDuff vagyis Glen Deveron. A 12 évesben egy csepp Islay maláta sincs, jóllehet 45%-ot is eléri a maláta whisky arány a blendben. Karakterét nagymértékben meghatározza, hogy színtisztán kukoricából készült gabonawhiskyt használnak a házasításhoz (főleg a North British és amíg létezett a Dumberton gabonalepárlókból), búzawhisky egyáltalán nincs benne. Az általam is kóstolt fiatalabb William Lawson Finestben érződik, hogy enyhén füstös Islay malátát is tartalmazhat leheletnyi mennyiségben, mert ízében észlelhető némi tőzegmentes füstösség. Remek whisky és sokak szerint magán hordozza az 1840-es évekre visszavezethető sajátosságokat. Kissé hideg, rezes, zöld gabonás az illata. Testes, olajos, malátásfüstösség bújkál az ízében, melyet fűszeres, gabonás, hosszú lecsengés követ. Itthon alig kapni. Ha szembejön, érdemes értenyúlni, mert nem drága, viszont karakteres, finom blended whisky. Sharon Stone nélkül is megéri az árát.

Blended Quest #1 The Famous Grouse

I held recently a short presentation about the whiskies of the world when I had to explain the difference between Single Malt Scotch and Blended whiskies. At our last Whisky Club we have tasted four Scotch Blended whiskies which are not so popular and widely available in Hungary. When I was preparing for the tasting, I have just recognized that the Blended whiskies are somehow scorned by the whisky-beginners. Therefore I decided to start a quest of Blended whiskies. Oceans of tasting notes are available for Single Malt Scotch in books and on the internet, but less for the Blended Scotch. So let's start with one of the most famous one: The Famous Grouse. William B. Gloag started blending whiskies in Perth, Scotland in 1820. He gave the name of Grouse Brand to his whisky and decided to use a handsome grouse as a symbol, because ha targeted mainly the hunters on the Highland. Today The Famous Grouse is the number one Blended Scotch in Scotland and England. Its character is given by Glenrothes, Tamdhu and The Macallan blended together with North British and Cambus grain whiskies. It is a very elegant and balanced whisky in nose and taste. The first smell of it feels like some warm highland summer breeze blowering the sweet scent of a flowery meadow. Its taste is intensive and long, grainy, malty aroma with a tiny little hint of smoke. It is lingering for long moments.

Nemrégiben tartottam egy whisky-bemutatót, ahol a világ whiskyjeinek különbözőségéről, azonbelül is főként a maláta és blended (kevert) whiskyk különbségeiről magyaráztam. A hét elején tartott Whisky Klub rendezvényünkön pedig négy, Magyarországon alig kapható és kevésbé ismert blended whiskyt kóstoltunk. A bemutatóra való felkészülés közben jöttem rá, hogy a kezdő whisky-rajongók mennyire lenézik a blended whiskyket. Ezért úgy döntöttem, hogy belekezdek itt a blogon egy Blended Whiskyk sorozatba. Könyvekben és az interneten ugyanis kismillió maláta whisky leírása, ízjellemzője olvasható, miközben blended whiskyké alig. Akkor kezdem az egyik leghíresebbel: The Famous Grouse. William B. Gloag 1820-ban Perth-ben kezdett whiskyket házasítani. Ő volt e whisky atyja, ő választotta a jópofa nyírfajdot jelképnek és adta whiskyjének a Grouse Brand nevet a felföldi vadászok kedvéért. Mára a The Famouse Grouse Skócia és Anglia elsőszámú blended whiskyje. A Glenrothes, Tamdhu, The Macallan maláta whisky trió adja jellegét, keverve a North British és Cambus gabona whiskykkel. Nagyon elegáns és kiegyensúlyozott ital. Édes, enyhén csípős, fűszeres, speyside-i fülledt-meleg, virágos illat. Intenzív hosszú, száraz gabonás-malátás íz, egészen parányi füsttel. Hosszú pillanatokig tartó lecsengéssel a végén.
