Jimmy Bedford retires

I heard this rumour for couple of months already, but didn't believe it. Then I have seen the news published on John Hansell's blog and I started to worry. If John writes it, it must be true. And it is. After working 40 years at the Jack Daniel's distillery (including the last 20 years as master distiller), Jimmy Bedford will retire effective end of March 2008. When he started in 1968, Jack Daniel's sales was less than 800,000 cases. Sales had reached 4 million cases when he took over as master distiller. Last year, sales exceeded 9.3 million cases and the company forecasts sales will exceed 10 million cases in 2008. Terrific results! I met him twice. First on a whiskey business trip in the distillery in Lynchburg in 2004. Then again here in Budapest in 2005 February. He accepted our invititaion and visited Hungary, hold several presentations and tasting as the global ambassador of Jack Daniel's. That time, I was responsible for Jack Daniel's brand work here, so I was very happy to host him around the city. He is a great master distiller, and a great guy. The whisk(e)y industry will miss him very much. I don't know anything about his succession as no announcement was made yet, but expected soon.

Az elmúlt hónapokban többször is hallottam a pletykát, de nem hittem el. A héten újra felbukkant a hír John Hansell whisky-blogján, és ha ő írja, igaz kell, hogy legyen. Az is. A Jack Daniel's-nél eltöltött 40 évnyi munka után (amelyből az utóbbi 20 évben ő a Whiskey Mester) Jimmy Bedford idén március végén nyugdíjba vonul. Amikor 1968-ban elkezdett a Jack Daniel's-nél dolgozni még csak 800.000 kartont adtak el az italból. A 4 milliót is meghaladta, amikor ő lett a Whiskey Mester. Tavaly már több mint 9,3 millió karton Jack-et adtak el szerte a világon. Jövőre pedig 10 millió karton eladást prognosztizál a vállalat. Micsoda eredmény! Én magam kétszer találkoztam vele. Először egy whiskey-ipari üzleti úton Lynchburg-ben a Jack Daniel's lepárlóban 2004-ben. Másodszor itt Budapesten 2005 februárjában. Meghívásunkra érkezett a városba, hogy sok-sok bemutatót és kóstolót tartson mint a Jack Daniel's márkanagykövete. Akkoriban a Jack Daniel's whiskeynek dolgoztam itthon, így nagy öröm volt napokat vele töltetni és a whiskeykről beszélgetni. Jimmy nagyszerű whiskey mester és nagyszerű fickó. Munkája, jelenléte hiányozni fog a whisk(e)y iparnak. Még nem lehet tudni, ki követi őt a whiskey mesteri székben, de állítólag hamarosan hírt adnak róla.

The Walkers

No, I don't want to draw up the family tree of the Walkers. I rather want to tell some words about the family and history of the Johnnie Walker blends. The brand was originally known as Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky. John 'Johnnie' Walker granted the business, but whisky sales was just 8% of the family business's income in his time. Alexander, his son, and later Alexander II, his grandson were the ones who established the Johnnie Walker brand around the world. The first whisky blend, Walker's Old Highland, was produced by Alexander in 1865. At the begining of the 20th century, the range of blends expanded with the Old Highland (later re-named for White Label), Special Old Highland and (as a successor of the Walker's Old Highland) the Extra Special Old Highland. The latest one was the early predecessor of the current Black Label. Grandsons George and Alexander II restructured the range. They stopped producing White Label, but introduced Johnnie Walker Red Label and Black Label. In 1932, they created Johnnie Walker Swing. The today known and popular range of Johnnie Walkers were completed with the Gold Label, Blue Label and couple of years later with the Green Label in the mid-90ies.

Nem a Walker család családfáját szeretném most elregélni, hanem inkább a Johnnie Walker blendek történetét. A jólismert márka eredeti neve Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky volt. John 'Johnnie' Walker kezdte az üzletet, jóllehet az ő idejében a whisky forgalmazásból származó bevétel még csak 8%-ot tett ki. A fia, Alexander, és egyik unokája, Alexander II voltak, akik valójában megalapították és közismertté tették a Johnnie Walker márkanevet szerte a világon. Első blended whiskyjüket Walker's Old Highland néven készítette Alexander 1865-ben. A XX. század első éveiben a portfóliót tovább bővítették az Old Highland (későbbi nevén White Label), a Special Old Highland, és az Extra Special Old Highland (mint a Walker's Old Highland utódja) whiskykkel. Ez utóbbi volt egyébként a mai Black Label elődje. Később a két unoka, George és Alexander II átstruktúrálták a portfóliót. Megszűntették a White Label-t, de bevezették a Red Label-t és a Black Label-t. 1932-ben pedig megalkották a Johnnie Walker Swing-et. A napjainkban is közismert és kedvelt Johnnie Walker sorozat a 90-es évek közepén egészült ki a Gold Label, Blue Label blended, majd pár évvel később a Green Label selected malt whiskykkel.
